Police Association Holds Elections

Sgt. Jermaine Hyde

Members of the Belize Police Department participated in an election earlier today to choose a new executive for the Police Association of Belize.  As many as ten candidates offered themselves for various seats on the central board, including Sergeant Jermaine Hyde, who was elevated to president in 2021 when the duly elected president ascended in rank and was no longer eligible to lead the association.  Hyde and his team were busy for the better part of last year looking after the welfare of fellow officers.  Their accomplishments during the past twelve months are what they are banking on to get them re-elected today.

“Out of the seven members that are presently, or were the members of the Central Board, six of us are bidding again and hopefully we are reelected so we can continue to work for the members of the police department and the members of our association.”

“Now tell us about your time in office so far and how have you tried to look after the best interest of the officers who are looking to the association for the protection of their rights.”

Sgt. Jermaine Hyde

“It wasn’t easy.  As you know, we are still in a pandemic.  We have seen this year, last year 2021, a number of police officers had gotten infected with the virus and as a police association, well the Police Association’s Central Board, we tried our best to assist our police in terms of getting care packages for them. There is presently a land scheme and we have forwarded some applications, over four hundred applications to the Ministry of Natural Resources and we are presently in that process of trying to acquire land for our members.  So we have been doing a number of things and we want our members to understand that we will continue to work for them if elected. This is not about competing, it’s about getting those people who want to look out for the welfare of the police officers and I believe anyone of us that are elected today will look out for the welfare of our police and we can work together, regardless if it’s my seven or the other three.
