Does the ComPol Hold Sway Over Police Association?

Kareem Musa

Does the Commissioner of Police influence the outcome of the Police Association’s elections? There have been suggestions that the ComPol holds sway over the management of the association, but no one has come forward with a formal complaint against him. Those questions were put to Home Affairs Minister Kareem Musa when he sat with the media on Wednesday.  Here’s how he responded.

Kareem Musa, Minister of Home Affairs

“I don’t engage in speculations and no, I have not heard any accusations or complaints from any officer and many of them, when they do have complaints to make, they make them to myself or the C.E.O, but in this particular instance, no. I have not heard any complaints in that regard.”

“The situation with the chairmanship though, if I am not mistaken, the commissioner changed the regulation so that no person can serve more than two terms.  So if indeed your slate wins and your members say that they want you to be chairman, you may be unable to serve, right, because you’ve already served two.”

“Yes, technically you’re right, but in reality I’ve only served one term.  The first term that I served, I was holding over because Ms. Usher was promoted and I just held over.  So technically I only served one term as a chairperson.”
