How Much Learning Have Children Lost Due to Pandemic?

Dian Maheia

During an interview with Chief Executive Officer Dian Maheia of the Ministry of Education, she told News Five children have experienced learning losses over the almost two years of distance learning. But how bad is it? She says the educational gap can only be determined when children are back in the classrooms so that an assessment can be done.

Dian Maheia, C.E.O., Ministry of Education

“We need to start, we need to get as many students back as we can. It is the only way for us to begin to try to regain some of the learning loss. It is the only way for teachers to try to get a handle on where their students really are.”

“Have you guys maybe done a survey or have an idea of the learning gap that has been created as a result of this pandemic?”

Dian Maheia

“We can’t do that until we get back, right. We need to be able to physically engage; we need the students so that the teachers are able to make that assessment. In all fairness whatever we do right now is not going to be complete, is not going to be comprehensive.”
