As information about the virus evolves, so has the response to its effects. With two years of experience in fighting COVID-19 and safeguarding the general public, Dr. Musa spoke about the lessons learnt by Belize’s health care professionals, and how critical the data has been to the national response.

Dr. Melissa Diaz-Musa, Deputy Regional Health Manager, Central Health Region

“Definitely everything has been so new. We have had to learn a lot. We have had to learn a lot about the infection control, about transmissibility, looking at presentations with symptoms. We had to really learn about who are the persons who are vulnerable who would worsen. So, all of this were taken with us in 2022 when we give advice. The vaccination, we know for a fact the vaccine has helped us as a country to save lives, to reduce severity of illness. And, we want to urge people to come out and get vaccinated. We started our vaccine, it has almost been one year, and we really want to ensure that persons are aware of the significance the vaccine plays in helping us to control the severity and control the hospitalizations as well. Of course, we could to look after the health of our country, and we got to look after our health system and ensure that integrity is maintained, so that when you need that service we are able to give you that service effectively and efficiently. So, we do need the general public to help us with this response. We do need people to be patient with us when you come to our health facility for testing. We are really trying our best. We are putting on more staff where is needed. We are trying to ensure we can give the care the country deserves. And, we are trying to ensure that we work together as a team to bring this wave down as quickly as possible.”
