Dr. Melissa Diaz-Musa, Deputy Regional Health Manager, Central Health Region
“As you know the numbers with regards to people travelling and tourists coming into the country has increased significantly and San Pedro is one of the biggest tourist spots and Caye Caulker as well. So we are heading out there to try to improve the booster shots that are going to be given. Our maternal and child health unit, we have assisted with sending additional nurses out to San Pedro to get the vaccinations up and to get the boosters given as quickly as possible. And we do understand that because they are busy, it might be difficult for persons to come to the health facilities. So we really want to push that we can go into the hotels, we can go into the banks and to other places to get everybody boostered up to get us protected and better prepared. In the end, the Ministry of Health and Wellness is responsible for the health of the nation and we are responsible to maintain the integrity of our health system and we can only do that if we get the response from the community as well. There are vaccine sites all over the country. We have tried to improve our access as much as possible. If you want, you can call us; we are willing to go to your work places and in fact we have been going to three or four work places daily to try to catch up with second dose and also to try to administer as many boosters as possible.”
