BCVI Says There May Be More Who Went Blind

Ayres-Musa says the number of diabetics that have gone blind that B.C.V.I. knows about might just be a fraction of the total number of people who have lost their eyesight because of the impediments that COVID brought along.

“These are just people of course, who have come to access our service. We don’t know of all the people who are still at home, still afraid to come out to receive eye care services or other healthcare services who are blind and haven’t been diagnosed yet. Diabetes is one of the leading causes of sickness and death in our population but people don’t often realize that blindness is a result of diabetes and if you don’t control your diabetes, if you don’t visit your eye doctor regularly, you will go blind. And it is irreversible; you cannot get that vision back.”
