PM Briceño Reaffirms Support For Taiwan After Nicaragua Switches to China

Prime Minister John Briceño took to Twitter on Saturday to reaffirm Belize’s support for Taiwan. This only days after regional neighbour Nicaragua flipped its support from Taiwan to the People’s Republic of China. The Taiwanese government reportedly expressed “heartfelt pain and regret” over Nicaragua’s decision, accusing the government of disregarding a “longstanding and close friendship” between the two people. Currently, only fourteen governments, including Belize, maintain formal ties with Taiwan. In his twitter post, P.M. Briceño spoke to a recent collaboration between Taiwan and the Government of Belize that will contribute to ongoing infrastructure development projects and the construction of a new government building in the Lake Independence Area of Belize City. Today the Prime Minister held a media breakfast at the House of Culture to improve working relations with the local press. While no interviews were given, the P.M. thanked their work during 2021.
