Wit Concrete Sunk to Become a Dive Site
Finally, the Wit concrete has taken her final bow. At the second attempt, the three hundred and seventy five foot long World War two cargo ship is now submerged in the Soldier Caye Conservation zone at Blackbird Caye. The intent is to provide a new source of income for the marine reserve and its stakeholders, by attracting snorkelers and wreck divers for a diving experience in the Turneffe Atoll. A joint release from the stakeholders of the new venture says the wreck’s revenue will be one hundred percent allocated to the protection of the area, including improving enforcement, new staff, better equipment, more vessels and engines and the upgrading of existing equipment, among other activities. The sunken ship is also projected to benefit the local marine life in the area as a home for diverse marine flora and fauna. Now renamed “The Wit”, the dive site is possibly one of the largest dive sites in the Caribbean.
