Beach Erosion on San Pedro: Land Reclamation Project Proposed
Coastal communities and islands across the country have been experiencing erosion as one of the many effects of climate n. In San Pedro, it is no different. Beaches have been washed away and the sea has gradually inched closer to some properties. Mayor Wally Nunez says that the council is planning to carry out a land reclamation project. The scope of the project is about twenty-five feet out for about one mile of sea front on the southern end of the island.

“Due to climate change, most of our beaches have been eroded and I have been directed to go to the group from climate change so that they can assist us. We might want to venture into writing for grants so that we can get some funding so that we can do some beach reclamation.”

“This reclamation is going to happen in which areas?”
Wally Nunez
“Mostly here in town, from the Boca Del Rio area to about the primary school, which is roughly around one mile. And the plan is to extend about twenty-five to thirty feet out.”

“That’s the amount that has been eroded over the years?”
Wally Nunez
“Some of it has been a little more. You can see it in front of the high school; it has been eroded quite badly to the point that the vehicles are actually riding right on the water side.”
