Opposition Questions Emoluments for New Hiring at Ministries

The Briceno Administration went back to the House of Representative on Friday to seek approval for the allocation of forty five million dollars for additional expenditure by way of a General Revenue Supplementary Appropriations Bill. This comes after a seventy million dollar Supplementary Appropriation Bill tabled in October.  In the new Supplemental, funds are being requested for expenses in the Court of Appeal, the Ministry of the Public Service, the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, twelve million dollars for Public Utilities, one million dollars to the Ministry of Education, and two million dollars to the Ministry of Border Defense, to name a few . In the Senate today, Lead Senator for the Opposition, Michael Peyrefitte, went through the line items in detail, questioning each one, while criticizing the Briceno Administration for its spending in times of severe national economic constraints.

Michael Peyrefitte, Lead Senator for Opposition

And you notice a trend Madam President, personal emoluments. Man, eena creole they explain to me that that dah pay, people pay. You have to consider this in the context of people who have had their salary cut by ten percent. You are telling them you can’t get your ten percent, yet you are adding to the wage bill. There is hardly a segment, hardly a line item for a Ministry that doesn’t have personal emoluments, because they are finding jobs for their people, whether they need it or not. And we are telling public officer, we can’t pay you, so let’s suffer together while you hire more people. For what? For what reason? Why do you need to hire somebody until the end of the financial year that you didn’t know you need to hire them in October?  This government, man, unu the give the people the blue, appropriate, the blues. But, unu use to be Blue, now unu drop the e. You know what the e use to stand for? Empathy, you have no empathy. You are telling people they can’t get their ten percent, yet the Ministry of Blue Economy and Civil Aviation, all they are asking for is personal emoluments, seventy thousand dollars. Who are they a hiring for seventy thousand dollars and why do they need people when you the cut people pay?”
