Senator Smith: Appropriations are “Slap in the Face”

Also rising to oppose the latest Supplementary Appropriation Bill was Senator for the National Trade Union Congress of Belize, Elena Smith. Smith, a public figure who has been at the forefront of the Joint Union’s resistance to Government pay cuts, took issue with new personal emoluments when so many had to sacrifice ten percent of their salaries.

Elena Smith, Senator for NTUCB

“When we look through at the personal emoluments, as my colleague said, my goodness, this is a slap in the face to us. Those of us who had to sacrifice, we had no choice. Despite not agreeing, we had no choice. And yes, we have been thanked for those sacrifices we made, because our sacrifice has enabled the government to get rid of the super bond. Nonetheless Madam President, many of these additional funds we see personal emoluments. It really and truly begs a lot of questions. We can only hope madam president that this is not going to be how we are going to be operating going forward. Because, if it is that we have to come here October and then we are here again December, and every six weeks we wah come, we are really and truly not doing what we ought to be doing.”
