Ministry of Health Breaks Silence on Omicron

Today, the Ministry of Health and Wellness, in the person of Doctor Francis Morey finally spoke out about the new COVID-19 variant, Omicron. As has been reported, the data shared so far after the variant was detected in South Africa indicates that omicron is more transmissible than the delta, but also that the symptoms are milder. Doctor Morey says that the information the ministry has is just the same as has been reported.

Dr. Francis Morey, Deputy Director of Health Services

“We are looking at it carefully, internally. The amount of information that is out here is not significant. I believe what you know and what we know at the ministry is what’s known globally. In regards to the omicron variant, we are still looking at the possibility of doing the gene sequencing in the country as to see when that variant comes into the country, we are able to detect it. We have partnered with Baylor College of Medicine and the support from them and CDC is what we are trying to gather and get. I mean the conversation is there and I have seen an exchange of emails for us to build that capacity in country.”

Doctor Morey says the biggest defence against any variant is the vaccine and urges residents to get inoculated.
