ASR/BSI Looks Forward to Meeting With PM

Cabinet has been encouraging Belize Sugar Industries and the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association to continue working in partnership while negotiating the terms of its revised commercial agreement. With the crop season tentatively scheduled to begin in a few weeks, but with no commercial agreement yet, can B.S.I. continue to receive sugar cane from B.S.C.F.A. members? Here is how the Vice President of International Relations at B.S.I. responded.

Mac McLachlan

“We did receive a letter about Cabinet’s encouragement for the industry to um continue to have crop, to continue discussing issues. It is never our intention to disadvantage any farmer or anything like that. We are anticipating having a conversation with the Prime Minister. The issue is you know there are some legal issues surrounding this. This is a private company, a commercial business. The way it works is regulated around legal agreements. So, we are discussing some of these issues with our legal advisors. I will just say, our intention is in no way to disadvantage any cane farmer. That said, we need to ensure things are done properly and in the right way. Looking forward to talking with the Prime Minister further about these issues and also discussing them with our legal team.”
