Belize Bank’s E-kyash App Catching On

Just a few weeks ago, the Belize Bank introduced its E-Kyash feature with a press conference and live demonstrations. Since then, more and more vendors are adding this form of payment to make it easier for customers to purchase their products and services.  Paul Lopez was out in Belize City checking out the payment system, by loading up on his favorite treats and visiting a popular barber’s shop.

“E-kyash was launched in early August as the nation’s first digital wallet.  The move makes sense, as the global trend of digital currency continues to grow. More and more people are moving away from physical cash to carrying their money in digital form. Through the E-kyash app, Belize Bank actually has made carrying and trading with digital currency simple.”

Today, we are here at Sugar Fix in Belize City. The name says it all; this is one of the choice places in the City for sugar addicts to get their daily fix. And recently Sugar Fix began taking E-kyash as a form of payment. I informed the cashier that I would be paying via E-kyash, upon which she opened the app and tapped the Dynamic QR option.  That gave her the option to insert the amount I owed, after which a barcode was generated.  I tapped the scan-to-pay option, scanned the QR Code and the payment is successful.  Over at King’s Cut inside the Northern Shops, Co-Owner and Barber Delroy Buckley takes payments through E-kyash.

“The benefit to me, like you say it’s cashless. And, I could go eena my cash app and I could see all my transactions. And, that gives me a better idea at the end of the day as to how I could balance off with my cash.”

Delroy also acts as an E-kyash Retailer. He has the ability to sell E-kyash to consumers.  In this case, however, you will have to use paper cash in exchange for E-kyash.

“I mean for sure, yeah I would recommend it to everybody. Everybody deh pan deh phone now, dah phone dah something weh everybody use pan a daily basis, teenagers, younger kids, older people always have deh phone. If dah something we yo always have eena your hand, you have the Ekyash, dah like yo have a wallet and phone eena your hand at the same time. So I think dah something really good fih everybody got.”

While Digital currency is already huge globally, many in Belize are yet to convert. Fortunately, E-kyash’s inventory of stores and business that handle this form of transaction continues to grow. Reporting for News Five, I am Paul Lopez.
