Leader of the Opposition Says Conservation Efforts and Blue Bonds Would Continue Under Future UDP Administration

During day one of the Investment Summit, News Five spoke with Leader of the Opposition, Patrick Faber about a number of issues, including the Blue Bonds. He reiterated statements made in the House about the effort originating under the previous administration, but also emphasized that the Belizean people do not need to worry about any incoming UDP administration of the future, changing course when it comes to the bonds or strides the country is making in marine conservation. He says on these matters national interests come first.

“We point out without hesitancy that this is the brain child of the UDP in government. In fact, the facts of the matter will point out that because we were aware that there was going to be an election and the possibility, albeit small as we saw it at the time, that there would be a change in government, we engaged the Opposition. Mr. Christopher Coye at the time, and other members of the Opposition who were being signaled as the financial leaders of the PUP at the time, was consulted by our Carla Barnett and Steve Duncan to let them know this initiative was coming forward. It is because we want to see that continuity. So, when it is that there is this kind of accomplishment of accomplishment now for the Government of Belize, for us it is not UDP or PUP, it is for Belize. And so, ten years down the road, five years down the road even, if there should be a change in government the things they subscribed to, the conservation efforts, the preservation of our marine resources, it is not something that we are not in support. You will see our track record in the UDP the moratorium on offshore drilling, how hard we fought to get Belize off the list of site endangered for UNESCO World Heritage in the case of the Belize Barrier Reef system. These are things I can go on and on for the record of the U.D.P.”
