Belize Won’t Advance to Next Round of Regional Cricket Tourney

Belize’s National Cricket Selection will not be advancing to another round of competition, following the T20 tournament in Antigua. That’s because the team has lost three important matches since the competition began last week. But while its dream of moving on has been dashed, the team is now focused on winning the next two games and improving its overall ranking within the region.  News Five spoke with the team’s manager and captain this afternoon. Here’s that update.

Dr. Roy Young, President, Belize National Cricket Association

“We are supposed to play six games in the tournament, so we are playing all six countries. We have played Canada, USA and Argentina and we lost to those three countries and we played Panama too and we won Panama.”

Kenton Young, Team Captain

“Today we lost against Argentina today. It was a poor performance on the [part of] the team but we’re looking to come back stronger tomorrow and win the last two games of the tournament.”

Isani Cayetano

“What are your chances at this point, given the challenges that you have been facing against those other teams, perhaps either your present ranking or your chances of being able to advance to another round of competition?”

Kenton Young

“Our chances of advancing, we can’t advance anymore but with our ranking, if we win the next two games it would be very good for our ranking. We would move up ten spaces, I feel, if we win the next two games. Bermuda is a big team and if we win, if we beat Bermuda that would be big for our cricket team as well because Bermuda has been to the World Cup before. So that would be a great victory for us. It’s a great experience, we have a young team. About two or three years from now these guys will be very good cricketers, great cricketers I should say. So this is a great learning experience, the team is very young and the players are motivated even though we have lost some games, we still haven’t broken the spirit as yet.”
