Supreme Irony or No? Did Marco Vidal Portend the Demise of His Own Unit?

Deputy Commissioner of Police Marco Vidal handed over the reins to ACP Alford Grinage, as Commander of Operations on Monday, amid the fiasco that his men have gotten themselves into with the landing of another drug plane on the Southern Highway.  Among the four policemen implicated in the incident, three were under his direct control as members of the Commander of Operations Strike Team, including his nephew, Corporal Elmer Nah.  The Commissioner of Police has gone on record to state that there is nothing to indicate that Deputy Commissioner Vidal was aware of or was part of what was taking place on Thursday night near Bladen.  Ironically, on August thirty-first, then operations commander Vidal, in addressing the Mobile Interdiction Team during an awards ceremony, spoke on the issue of police officers working in tandem with drug traffickers in the region to freight cocaine shipments through Belize.  It would seem that those comments were addressed to members of the MIT, oddly enough, the problem existed within his own unit.

“As the MIT, we have to be strong, we have to be firm and we have to be respectful to people but at the same time we have to take our job very seriously. And I become concerned when we start working along with the drug traffickers because one of our primary functions is to stop the drug traffickers from getting their work done and I become concerned when I get to understand that there is some move to assist these drug traffickers when we can’t be assisting them because of our functions, our role, our position that we hold. And I have been concerned about it, it’s a matter that I have discussed with the commissioner and I continue to discuss and we’ll be taking action on that.”

“Can I revisit a question that was put to you by my colleague in the media on Friday with respect to either complicity or incompetence on the part of the commander of operations.  If at first there may not have been any clear nexus or information that would suggest that he knew or did not know, with the developments that have happened over the weekend, perhaps that has changed your perspective?

“I just said a while ago that at this time there is no evidence to suggest that he is involved or may know, but it is still a matter being investigated. We’re not going to rule it out per se, but it must be looked at to make sure.”
