Belize City Marathon a Success!

The first ever Belize City Marathon took place on Sunday. It included a half marathon, a five-K and a ten-K run through Belize City streets. It was a collaborative effort between the Belize City Council and the National Sports Council and was put together to not only promote healthy living, but also to jumpstart the return of sporting activities. Three winners were recognized in all races in both male and female categories.

“This is something that happens in every big city that we know of. Bringing this to Belize is one of the best ideas that somebody brought it to me and said, Kaya this is something that happens everywhere, you are now in a position at the Belize City Council and the National Sports Council; let’s see how we can make this a reality. I think this first time we are doing it, the prizes are lucrative and this is the start so imagine where we will have it in the next couple of years.”

“We are saying, we have been saying, myself, Kaya and the rest of the team, we have been saying we have to test our mantle and the only way to do it is to have a live event. And so actually the two five-mile runs were one of those. The Belize City Marathon is unique in the way it is designed, the route, because we don’t have to have crowds in one specific area because the marathon is going to touch every portion of the city.”

In the five-K run, Lucille Ramos, Teresita Grajales and Venicia Rodriguez took the top three spots in that order, meanwhile Andre Armstrong, Christopher Broaster and Rondre Lewis came first, second and third in the male category. In the ten-K race, Jaime Usher took first place for the females, while Radman Smith came out on top for the males. And then for the half marathon, first place was won by Jane Champion followed by Martha Novelo and Liliani Ordonez taking third place.  Meanwhile, Albert Davis, Leon O’Brien and Mauro Cucul took the top three sports in the male category.
