Bar Association: Belize No Longer Blacklisted: Pandora Papers Report Amounts to “Smear Campaign”

The Bar Association of Belize has responded to the publication of the “Pandora Papers” by the International Consortium of Independent Journalists. The Association says it unhesitatingly and resolutely condemns any form of tax fraud, money laundering, terrorism, corruption, or other illegal activity, whether in the offshore industry or onshore. They say the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development monitors whether countries are following internationally established norms for the offshore industry and while Belize has been blacklisted in the past, it is in compliance with the international standards. In their view, certain practitioners of the offshore industry in Belize have been unfairly targeted, without evidence, in what amounts to what they term a smear campaign. The Bar Association remind the public there is nothing unlawful or sinister about providing international financial services in Belize to international clients, provided it is done strictly in accordance with the law, established regulations and guidelines.
