Women’s Volleyball Heads to Central American Championships

Viewers may recall that 2018 was a big year for women’s volleyball in Belize. Fans from across the nation witnessed the Belize Women’s National Volleyball team capture silver in the Central American Women Volleyball Championship on their home court. Today, the women’s national team departed Belize for Nicaragua to once again compete in the Central American Championship games. They are hoping for gold this time around, despite the challenges the team faced in preparing for the games, due to COVID restrictions. Their first game is on Monday. News Five caught up with the team outside the PGIA this afternoon.

“Actually we have a lot of young players, but as the captain I talk to them a lot. I tell them you have to have the heart, you have to be dedicated. We have to be really willing to play and be all excited to be out there so that we could at least medal for Belize.”

Paul Lopez

“Who do you think will be your biggest challenge?”

Nellisa Ramirez

“Well, I think Costa Rica will be our biggest challenge, because we beat them in 2019. So they are going to come really, really hard. Also Guatemala as well, but we know to defend ourselves, we are going to defend and make sure we do what the team is supposed to do out there.”

Lawrence Bennett

Lawrence Bennett, Head Coach, Belize Women’s National Volleyball

“We are very optimistic; we have been working out at least six months now, three months on the track and three months in the gym due to COVID. We feel we have a good chance, because no team has seen any other team. But, I hope we have a secret for them that they haven’t seen before. We expect them to do the same thing and we expect more from them, since we are always second. For the last three tournaments we have been second, now we hope to be first.”

Allan Sharp

Allan Sharp, President, Belize Volleyball Association

“It’s been extremely difficult; most of the countries have an advantage over us that they opened quite some time ago. They opened last year, fully opened for sports and only had spurts of closure. Um, so that has been a major challenge. Even the curfew, you know we can’t practice late and some of the girls work. When the curfew is eight or less it becomes an issue to try and train properly. But, nevertheless the girls have been committed, the women have been committed. They have been preparing and working hard. Coach Larry Bennett has been working with them as best as anybody can do. Ms. Lupita Quan has put in tremendous effort into everything we can do to get the girls as ready as possible.”

The match will be live streamed and the team will be sharing that information as it comes available so Belizean fans can tune in.
