PM Says Bridge from Ambergris Caye Would Have Minimal Environmental Impact

When pressed on whether environmentalists might not welcome the idea of having a bridge that connects Ambergris Caye to the Yucatan, the PM said the impact on the environment would be minimal.

Prime Minister John Briceno

“There’s this theory that Ambergris Caye was connected to the peninsula. But, there is this theory that the Maya dug a canal there. So instead by, you know you could imagine the paddle twenty plus miles to get to the tip and twenty plus miles to get to go up? Well we figured we just cut a canal. And, so, that I don’t think would be an issue because we are talking about forty feet, I have not been there, but there is about forty feet of water that we have by putting in a canal. And then that would open up that whole area, the whole Ambergris area. I mean in cabinet we just appointed a North Ambergris Development Committee that would try to look at having planned development in the northern part of Ambergris Caye.”
