If Numbers Go Down, Activities Can Go Up

Two weeks ago, we told you Cabinet approved a plan to implement new COVID-19 measures that will be enforced over the next three months. According to PM Briceno there will be a gradual resumption of a number of activities Belizeans can begin again, and even the possibility of the borders reopening before the end of the year. The catch is the COVID positivity rate has to drop significantly. Today on OYE he shared some of the recommendations made by the COVID Medical Task Force.

“They are saying, for the month of October, we want the positivity rate to go down below ten percent. And so, we moved the no-movement Sundays. And basically we are saying to people, because we are starting to see the numbers go down, is to basically to then have the BPOs only at fifty percent. The churches, while it is that they are not recommending opening up churches, we agreed that we are going to open the churches at fifty percent, but for people who are fully vaccinated. And in this case, what we are saying, instead of going to a house of worship and wanting to give a ticket to everybody, hold the pastor responsible. I have met with some pastors. I met with the two evangelicals group and I explained that to them. I said we will be happy to do that because we want to open up, and go in an open field and got everybody spaced out. So, we have accepted. Then move the curfew to nine o’clock. Once we get it under ten percent, and we expect it to get it by the end of this month. Next month then, increase the curfew hours ten to ten o’clock to start to have contact sports. We will have competitive contact sports starting the twentieth of October, because of an appeal from the Minster of Sports. So we are working on that. But they have to be fully vaccinated. Then in November then to increase the, cut down on the curfew hours to go to eleven o’clock, and eleven o’clock on the weekends. Again, but continue with what we have been doing. They believe that by the end of November we should be at five percent or below. Then, hopefully if we can get that, for Christmas we are looking at curfew at eleven, and then weekends at twelve o’clock. By the end of the year we expect to open the borders, land borders, for people who are fully vaccinated.”
