Video of Brown Water Investigated in Seine Bight
A video circulating on social media shows brown water being pumped off a beach and into the sea in Seine Bight Village. The resident who posted the video is heard voicing her concerns about it being dumped in an area where children are swimming. New Five spoke to the chairman of the village, Jose Aleman, who told us that after the video surfaced, he did his own investigation. He says the developers of a proposed gas station in the community have been digging in the area to continue construction work. Due to the height of the water table, excess water is being drained back into the sea. But he insists it is nothing to worry about.
On the Phone: Jose Aleman, Chairman, Seine Bight Village
“It would be only fair to say that the water flowing into the sea, one is not contaminated two it is not waste water. This is what we would refer to as ground water in its natural state. If you would dig in your back yard, three to four feet, you would first reach the water table. In Seine Bight we have porous soil and as water flows into the earth, this water is unfiltered through the sand. If you would take this same water and put it in a glass, you would see that the sediments and the residue would go on the bottom and the water would turn much clearer. But due to the color of the soil and the type of soil we have in Seine Bight, which is black of course, the color of this water would either be brown or black. This land has never been known to be a farm land. So, of course no insecticide or pesticides is being used their any at all. As it relates to any fluids that would be toxic to the environment, those were not used as well. However, if you are going to construct any building and the water is high, you would need to seep out the water first before you could continue your work. That is the process that is being done there, and the water being sent to the sea has no toxics in it and it not dangerous to the environment. A geotechnical report was done and a water quality test, I assume, as well was done by the developers. And, by no means is the water harmful to the environment.”
