Rodwell Ferguson

But of the thirty-six villages that are still without electricity, only twenty-eight are expected to get electrified because some Mennonite communities have declined to be included. Nevertheless, Minister of Public Utilities, Energy and Logistics, Rodwell Ferguson says that the work has already begun in southern Belize. G.O.B. will thereafter need to source funds to electrify other villages.

“We have a project going on right now in the villages of Indian Creek that will benefit Medina Bank and Golden Stream. That was funded by the United Arab Emirates and that should be in completion before the year is over. There is also a project going on in the village of Corazon Toledo likewise and that will be in completion by June of next year. You rightly said that there are thirty-six communities across the country that doesn’t have access to electricity. Of the thirty-six, twenty-eight want electricity and eight don’t want. And the eight communities that don’t want electricity are all connected to the Mennonite communities and I guess it is their religion and culture not to have access to twenty-four hours electricity. Otherwise, everything is going on stream. So we have twenty-eight villages, majority in Toledo – I think about nineteen in Toledo – and there is some in Cayo, a couple in Orange Walk, and a couple in Corozal.”
