Staff, not oxygen or space, would be only limiting factor for KHMH COVID ward

CEO Seguro says the public need not worry that oxygen will become a limiting factor in determining how many patients can be attended to in the COVID unit. Seguro says the hospital can also take on the challenge of finding additional space to admit new COVID-19 patients. The only limiting factor, he says, would be staffing for new spaces and additional patients.

“The reason why we are still able to survive is because, yes the unit is designed to hold twenty three beds, but that is with all things in place, meaning we have adequate patients and we have number of staff, supplies available and all that. But, what we have been doing is putting one or two more patients in a bigger room. Where we could have hold seven we are putting in eight or nine without compromising the patients safety. But, yes we are able to compensate a little bit more for patients. But, we will find a space limit, and if we think about increasing the space, that is where it becomes complicated with staffing that increased space. So, right now we are still tending to all the patients in the allocated space. But, once that space has to be increased, then we will have to look at additional staffing.”

“We are at record numbers where COVID 19 numbers are concerned. How many beds do we have available within the Unit?”

Timothy Seguro

“We have a design capacity for twenty three beds. However, we are tending right now to thirty two patients, twenty eight of them being COVID positive.”

“If we keep this up, we will have to find new space.”

Timothy Seguro

“That is where it will be complicated. Finding the new space will not be that much challenging. It is manning that new space that will be the challenge.”
