Dr. Cuellar on Breakthrough COVID Deaths

The news that three of four COVID-19 deaths that occurred since the weekend were among fully vaccinated people has prompted COVID experts to pay keener attention to people with co-morbidity issues or pre-existing health conditions. News Five spoke today with Internist and COVID survivor himself, Dr Fernando Cuellar, about these deaths. He says that while he does not speak in an official capacity, the number of death among the fully vaccinated is a cause for concern among physicians.

“We are very alarmed, indeed, we’re very worried; we’re very concerned because I would think that over the past two months, we’ve heard a lot of people after being vaccinated, still end up severely ill in the hospital. I think we’ve seen, perhaps, I think eleven or twelve deaths in people who are fully vaccinated. First, I would say that I cannot speak officially, I don’t have that authority, I’m just giving an opinion as somebody who has been involved with COVID and the like over the past eighteen months, so I’m not speaking in any way from an official standpoint, but those eleven or twelve deaths that have occurred in fully vaccinated people seems to be in people who have severe comorbidities, meaning they have a lot of other serious illnesses alongside it; people with cancer, people with renal failure, people on dialysis. So, that might be one of the explanations of why these people have died after being fully vaccinated. The age too, is playing a role, and we have to look at it, we have to examine it, we have to audit it. We have to go over it and see why in Belize as opposed to other parts, the numbers are much higher in deaths after the vaccine. I don’t think it is something we should shy away from, I don’t think it’s something we should be afraid to answer. As a matter of fact, I would hope that the Ministry (of Health and Wellness) and the authorities come out earlier than later to answer these things in a more official capacity and not give room for those people who are already afraid of the vaccine or the famous anti-vaxers to say “Aha!  See! People who have taken the vaccine still die.” Cause I’m sure that will happen.”

“We’re just coming out of a two-Sunday lockdown, seven o’clock curfew and so forth, what’s your prediction for let’ say the next month or so?”

Dr. Fernando Cuellar

“I don’t think we will see the fruits of these last maneuvers til at least another two or three weeks. I think t least for the next two weeks we’ll still see the high numbers coming out, but we should start see a downturn after two or three weeks.”

Dr. Cuellar advises against any type of celebration or observance for Halloween and Garifuna Settlement Day, in order that we may start to see fewer infections heading into the Christmas season.
