Kolbe Copes With Coronavirus

The Belize Central Prison continues its fight against COVID-19, as inmates and staff still contract the virus. According to Virgillio Murrillo, CEO of the Kolbe Foundation, almost three hundred cases have been detected within the prison’s gates since the onset of the pandemic. He says a recent spike can be attributed to new inmates.

“This is just a summary of all the cases that have shown up as positive in the Belize Central Prison since the pandemic came knocking back in September of last year. What we are seeing in this summary is that, among staff, we had four females and twelve males thus far having tested positive within the prison. Among intimates, there were seventeen females and two hundred and sixty six males. That gives you a total of two hundred and ninety nine cases. We have done a total of a thousand five hundred and eighteen tests. We have two hundred and seventy nine recovered, and as we speak right now we only have twenty active cases. Almost all of these cases that we see here in September are coming in by new admission into the prison. So, we had fourteen cases from that State of Emergency for Southside, Belize City. We have had fifty nine cases from September, August I should say, right into September of this year.”
