Young People on the Streets and Out of School

Talking about interventions, while we were with the Director Nicholas of the National Commission of Families and Children, she spoke of the need for change in legislation for the age of mandatory education. The data is showing that a lot of young persons are on the streets and out of school.

Margaret Nicholas, Executive Director, NCFC

“A lot of our young people have not been able to continue their primary school education. A lot of these children are on the streets. I am not sure where our truancy officers are and so again, we have a major problem. We have advocated for the age of voluntary education to be increased at least to sixteen. I know some people are now clamoring for eighteen. And that might be the right age, however, it needs a definitely change in legislation because as you know and I know our young people can get married at sixteen with the permission of their parents. If we look at our hold education system that needs a shift as well because not everybody is academically inclined so people also need to have life skills.”
