Hospitalizations Jump in September

Andre Sosa

Dr. Andre Sosa, Chairman of the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital Association was also at the head table. To put things into perspective in terms of the increase in recent hospitalizations, Dr. Sosa says September has already surpassed August’s record.

Dr. Andre Sosa, Chairman, K.H.M.H.

“In the sixteen days of September that has passed so far, we already have sixty-two admissions to the K.H.M.H. In all of August, we had sixty-one admissions and august marked the greatest number of admissions since last year. So, obviously there is a problem. Our COVID Ward was designed for twenty three persons. For the last three weeks we have been at thirty persons more or less. So, obviously we have had to make more space to accommodate those additional patients. There is more space we can make use of, however that space is not only limited, and with more patients there is greater need for staff and equipment and other resources. Again, those are not unlimited. When we increase the number of patients at this ratio, in comparison to the personnel, the number of nurses and doctors that are there to attend to them that can affect quality, the delivery of care is affected.  If you have one nurse or doctor for eight or ten patients, obviously the quality of care slips.”
