Trash Impasse Continues: CitCo Collecting Garbage on its Own

Reports have been coming into News Five about residential garbage not being picked up for over a week. In some cases, Belize City residents have taken to social media to express their concern about the public health hazard associated with mounting trash.  And so, a News Five’s team took to city streets to find garbage bins overflowing and bags of waste outside of residential properties across the north and south sides of the city. When we contacted the management of Belize Waste Control, we were told that they remain on an ad hoc form of collection since there is still an impasse with the Belize City Council. Today, News Five spoke with the councillor responsible for garbage, Micah Goodin, who says that the council has moved to use its own resources to collect trash in the interim.

“Since 2018, our council has been able to meet all its contractual and legal obligations, however with the advent of COVID-19, finances have been a bit strained and that is because members of the public have had personal challenges, financial challenges and so that has impacted our ability to meet payments to entities such as the Belize Waste Control. It has been about two weeks or so that they have been picking up garbage, but not at the same force that we’ve been accustomed to. But to fill the gap left by them, we have tried our best to deploy additional manpower, deploy additional machinery so as to ease the burden of the residents.”

“So the counsel has been taking on some of those duties to pick up residential garbage?”

Micah Goodin

“Yes, we have been getting a lot of complaints from our hotline and so we’ve tried our best to reach out and to address these issues just to have our residents not live in that sort of discomfort.”
