Minister Mahler Says Cabinet Taking Escobar Death Seriously

Anthony Mahler

Earlier today, Minister of Tourism and Diaspora Relations, Anthony Mahler gave us his opinion on the shooting death of Jessie Escobar. He says the incident was discussed in Cabinet and measures will be taken.

Anthony Mahler, Minister of Tourism and Diaspora Relations

“It is an unfortunate situation that should never have happened. It was senseless. It did not escalate to that point where deadly force should have been used. So, we have spoken about that in Cabinet and we want to make certain decisions and put in place certain protocols and certain plans for us to minimize any of that type of event from happening again. Now people in the Santa Famalia area were frustrated and angry and that is what you saw. Now, breaking the law like that does not help, but they were venting. But I understand the frustration from the family, and friends and people in that community and hopefully we never have to have another Laddie and we never have to have another Jessie. It is not right and I don’t want to see my people living in fear like black Americans living in the United States. I used to live in Georgia and I know how that feels when you are targeted by the police. I know how that feels. So, I can only express my sympathies to the family. We will put in place the measures to mitigate and minimize these incidents from happening.”
