Athletes Now Have Access to Olympic Type Sporting Equipment

Earlier this year when COVID swept through, initially the Lord Ashcroft Foundation had established a fund valued at ten million dollars towards various charitable initiatives in Belize. While a significant portion of that amount has been used, the Foundation did not omit sports. Today, the Belize Athletics Association received a donation of equipment from the Lord Ashcroft Foundation.  Marion Ali was on hand at the Marion Jones Sporting Complex, where the brief handing over took place.

The pieces of equipment that Chairman of the Ashcroft Foundation, Lyndon Guiseppi handed over to President of the Belize Athletics Association, Deon Sutherland, represents just a portion of the first of three phases that the Lord Ashcroft Foundation has pledged to the Association. The donor, we learned from Chair of the Foundation, Lyndon Guiseppi, has high regard for sports in Belize.

“Mr. Ashcroft, I don’t know if you’re aware, is a great admirer of the athletics generally and the athletics in Belize, and I think he saw it fitting to contribute to what he thought was an organization which has done an exceptional job.  And I think this is simply encouragement to the athletes in Belize to continue to strive for excellence.”

Excellence is exactly what the association is striving for, and the collective performance of the athletes at the last Central American Games and the last Olympics was cause for the Foundation to look its way. The gifts are greatly appreciated.

“Once you have the proper training equipment, your performance in and out of the country will definitely improve. Take for example shot put – there is three-K, four-K, five-K and we don’t have all of those. So the different categories of athletes need the different equipment and so what we have here now is that we have equipment from the infants right up to the senior athletes.”

And while the association is pleased with the gifts it received today, there’s more to come.

“The other two installments will involve a technical component which will involve training for coaches and the third component will be the purchase of uniforms for members of the athletic association and the various teams that will represent Belize going forward.”

“To what amount?”

Lyndon Guiseppi

“The total contribution for this particular initiative will be a hundred thousand dollars.”

The Association says it is now in need of a storage container for the equipment, which for the time being will be housed at the Marion Jones Stadium.  Guiseppi says the Association can apply for that assistance through the Belize Bank, whose marketing department has also established funds for these kinds of projects.
