Linda Gillett is Seeking Damages for Laddie’s Shooting Death

Fourteen-year-old Laddie Gillett lost his life in an officer-involved shooting in Placencia back in July.  The incident sparked public outrage as the teenager was shot and killed while fleeing from police officers, men Gillett and his companion thought were robbers. The police had been called out to the area by a security guard at a nearby resort.  Despite not being raised by his biological mother, she is making claim for compensation for his death.  On Monday, the law office of Elrington and Company issued a pre-litigation letter in which damages in the sum of fifty thousand dollars are being sought by Linda Gillett.  This morning, however, the law firm was informed that the claimants are proceeding without its counsel.  Attorney Orson Elrington spoke with News Five earlier today.

“The mother of Laddie Gillett, Ms. Linda Gillett, approached us, I believe, shortly after the death of young Laddie Gillett and requested our services.  We agreed to do so basically on a pro bono contingency basis.  She didn’t pay a single dollar or a single cent but we thought that it was in the interest of justice to ensure that the family of Laddie Gillett got rightfully compensated for the losses suffered.  Obviously, one of the first things that we had to ascertain was to confirm that indeed she is/was and is the legal guardian of Laddie Gillett which took us some weeks to do.  We had to follow the legal process of making that confirmation and we did so and we spent the time doing the necessary research to confirm what is the proper compensation that would be due to the mother and to the family.  We did so and yesterday we issued the pre-litigation letter based on that research.  This morning, as we had discussed previously, the mother, along with the uncle visited our offices and informed us that they no longer wanted to either proceed with the matter or at least have us retained on the matter and so obviously we terminated the retainer agreement at that point in time with Ms. Linda Gillett, who is the mother of Laddie Gillett.”
