Opposition to Nominate Member for National COVID Response Team

John Briceño

Leader of the Opposition Shyne Barrow will be nominating a medical professional for the National Medical COVID-19 Response Team.  When he asked Prime Minister John Briceño about the reconvening of the National Oversight Committee, the PM revealed that the Opposition did not respond when an invitation was sent to designate a nominee to the response team.

Prime Minister John Briceño

“If the Leader of the Opposition would have checked with the Leader of the Party, he would have told you that the Ministry of Health and Wellness did invite the opposition to join the National Medical COVID-19 Response Team. I have a copy of the letter on the seventeenth of December 2020. It is a letter that was written to the Leader of the Opposition, then, honorable Patrick Faber. 1 And then the Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the recommended Dr. Jorge Hidalgo. We checked with the Minster of Health and he assured me that the committee meets once and sometimes twice a month.  I know that the other side will want to jump up in glee and say it is spreading again,  the new variant is so much more contagious, but more importantly, many people are reckless and believe that COVID is gone, and simply don’t want to take the vaccination.  So, madam speaker, if the Leader of Opposition is still interested in nominating a person, the go ahead, but please nominate a good person. That is all I am asking from you, and will not go and play politics in the group.”
