What are Breakthrough Cases? Dr. Jorge Hidalgo Explains

Jorge Hidalgo

Doctor Cuellar’s infection is what is being described medically as a breakthrough case.  While there are instances of breakthrough cases in which a patient dies, other factors such as morbid obesity or other underlying health conditions are contributing factors. Or perhaps COVID was contracted before the vaccinations took full effect.  One of the doctors who helped to treat Doctor Cuellar is Doctor Jorge Hidalgo. He is an internist and intensivist at the Belize Healthcare Partners. He explains what breakthrough cases are, as well as the severity of the symptoms usually exhibited.

“We need to start defining how or what we refer to as breakthrough cases.  Essentially, a vaccine breakthrough case is defined as the detection of the SARS COVID-2 infection in an individual who has been fully vaccinated against COVID-19.  That means fully vaccinated, having the two doses, in that case, the AstraZeneca or the Pfizer and then after two weeks of that, meaning before that it’s not, it could be that if you got COVID-19 before two weeks to be fully vaccinated, more likely the person is already in the incubation period of COVID. In terms of the breakthrough, we also can refer, one of the most important things is that the vaccines are not a hundred percent.  So we will expect breakthrough infections for the majority of these infections that normally are going to be mild.  We have the Sisonke Study which says that ninety-four percent of the breakthrough cases were essentially mild and four percent of the cases were moderate and two percent of the cases were severe infections.”
