Maya Heroes Day 2021 is Celebrated!

The Northern Maya Association of Belize has recognized leaders of the Mayan community who over the years have dedicated a large part of their lives to safeguarding and promoting the heritage of their parents and forefathers. So ever since 2017 every year they celebrate Maya Heroes Day. This year, despite the COVID-19 pandemic, these leaders were recognised. The purpose of the initiative is to create awareness, appreciation, and pride for Mayan roots among our society, especially in the younger generations. A brief ceremony was held in Orange Walk.

“When we think of the battle of Orange Walk or even Maya heroes, Marcus Canul immediately and justifiably jumps to mind. But there are many other Maya heroes who fought and continue to fight on the frontlines of modern-day battles in Belize. One such ongoing battle is preserving and teaching our children about Maya heroes, artists, writers and musicians and most importantly to make them understand the importance of connections to the land they live on. In our role within the Northern Maya Association, it is imperative to have honest and brave conversations to honor and recognise the strides accomplished by our Yucatec Maya people. Today, therefore, we celebrate Maya Heroes Day with our now traditional, but most importantly, wreath laying ceremony.”
