P.S.U. Urges G.O.B. to Pay Workers Overdue Overtime

The Public Service Union is calling out the Government of Belize over unpaid overtime for public officers. The P.S.U. says for the last two months they have registered the concerns of shift workers, including nurses, doctors, pharmacists, emergency technicians, and lab technologists but so far the situation has not been rectified. The union says that as a result of the ten percent pay cut, the working hours of many public officers were reduced but this has created problems since the base number of hours has changed for many workers. The union says public officers have continued to work excess hours beyond the reduced work week; all in an effort to ensure continued and uninterrupted services to the Belizean public. They say public officers are now in receipt of their end-of-month payment for August 2021, but once again their salaries and wages are short for current and outstanding overtime payments.  In accordance with our existing Trade Dispute with the Government of Belize, the Public Service Union of Belize says it hereby notifies the general public that the union stands in solidarity with all Public Officers who have taken the bold decision to refuse to work overtime effective immediately. They say the Government continues to find money for what they term “irresponsible and political hiring and firing,” for Ministers and C.E.O.s who they say “continue living the high life off the backs and labor of Public Officers and other workers of this country.”
