Haulover Bridge to be Replaced: Construction to Last 2 Years

An iconic part of Belize’s highway system will finally be replaced. The government announced today that it has awarded a thirty-million Belize-dollar contract for the Haulover Bridge Replacement Project to M&M Engineering Consultants Limited.  The project will be implemented by the Ministry of Infrastructure Development, while an Italian company that specializes in bridges, Politecnica Ingegneria ed Achitectura will provide technical and administrative supervision.  According to a release from the government press office, funding for the project dates back to 2017 when a loan of twenty-four million dollars was secured from the OPEC Fund for International Development, toward a budgeted thirty million dollars.  Two contractors were contacted in 2018, but only one submitted a bid, and it was considerably over budget. Another attempt was made this year and a contract awarded.  The Haulover Bridge Replacement Project will install a new multiple-span reinforced concrete structure immediately downstream of the existing bridge which was installed in 1947 and has deteriorated considerably over the years. The new structure accommodates two lanes of traffic, and has shoulders and dedicated pedestrian sidewalks on each side. The work will be carried out over the next twenty-four months.
