Deputy DHS Says Cluster is Due to Irresponsible Behavior

Interestingly, the cluster at the San Ignacio and Benque Viejo health facilities happened around the same time that neighbouring Guatemala had reported a collapse of its health system due to the rise in COVID cases. Today, that country reported the presence of the deadly lambda variant as well. We asked Doctor Morey if he believes that border crossings by people from Guatemala into Belize are responsible for the cluster detected in these western towns. He says the problem may very well be right here at home.

Voice of: Dr. Francis Morey, Deputy DHS, Ministry of Health & Wellness

“We’ve seen what has been happening in the entire country with the numbers that are going up, in which most of our citizens are still thinking that this COVID pandemic is still something fictional. Most certainly, the entire group of medical staff and healthcare persons are sick and we have so many of our staff out at this time. Hence the need to continue vaccinating, early detection and testing of those persons who we deem as suspects of close contacts of individuals who have tested positive. We are aware of what is happening in our neighbouring countries and if the public health measures are not adhered to, as being suggested by the entire medical community, then we may have what is happening outside of Belize.”
