St. Vincent Prime Minister Injured During COVID Protest

The Prime Minister of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is recovering after being hit by an object thrown at him during protests against COVID-19 regulations on Thursday. Reuters news agency is reporting that Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves had been walking through a group of protesters on his way into Parliament.  Lawmakers there were discussing a public health regulation that would require most frontline workers to be vaccinated against the coronavirus or risk termination. With more on the story, and dramatic footage of the incident, here is a report from Caribbean Week in Review.

The Prime Minister of Saint Vincent was flown to Barbados for an MRI scan. His son, the Minister of Finance, has asked the assailant to hand themselves in for what he termed the deliberate “attempt on the Prime Minister.” He also called on the members of the Opposition and their supports to exercise restraint.  The Government of Belize unequivocally condemns the physical assault on Doctor Ralph Gonsalves. Today, G.O.B. issued a statement condemning the attack, calling for those responsible to be brought to justice. G.O.B. also wished the prime minister a speedy recovery.
