Jenny Lovell On Dealing with Stress

Many people aren’t aware that stress plays a major role in one’s mental health, or even that there are different types of stress. Add depression to stress, and the problem is compounded, much like what Olympic gold medal gymnast, Simone Biles, is currently experiencing. Mental Health therapist, Jenny Lovell says that accepting that you are over-stressed and making the decision to say you’ve reached a point where you need to give up something is strength in itself and something that deserves admiration.

“You work, you practice, you put in your all into this, then something happens and with stress – stress can come on – you have no idea because she knows she is going out there competing with people from all over the world. But then you add something else to that and then you have this situation that’s overwhelming and we’re talking today of the different types of stress. You know, you have the basic stress that everyone has – I woke up late and I need to get to work. That’s stressful. But if you add the eustress, good stress. Eustress is the ‘Oh, I’m going to the Olympics and I’m going to bring back some medals, that’s eustress. It’s good stress, but guess what – it’s good stress coupled with other things then it becomes toxic stress.”
