Christian Workers Union to Meet with Port of Belize Heads Next Week
In an update to the looming labor dispute at the Port of Belize, P.B.L. has reportedly agreed to meet with the Christian Workers Union next week. The union has served the port with a twenty-one-day notice of intended industrial action because stevedores fear they will be losing wages if the company which exports sugar at the port and hires workers to offload it, A.S.R./B.S.I., shifts its operations to the port at Big Creek. While the C.W.U. said yesterday they wanted negotiations, President Mose Hyde says the union stands ready to sit down with the port management for discussions.
Evan “Mose” Hyde, President, C.W.U.
“The Labor Commissioner invited the Union with our reps to get us to commit to meet with P.B.L., to tell us about the dates that P.B.L. has available. So, she has been actively trying to get us around the table. And, well we are willing to meet with PBL right now, this afternoon, midnight, tomorrow morning, tomorrow afternoon, Saturday, Sunday, Monday. We want to meet, but I think she still wanted us to come in, and we expressed that there is great urgency here and we believe it is important to act reflecting that urgency. I believe that the LC indicated to us, she indicated to us that P.B.L. has said that they are willing to have a discussion on Wednesday, earliest day, Wednesday next week at two o’clock.”

“With both parties?”

“Not in person, they prefer it to be virtual. It is a meeting that will be with us, our reps and the P.B.L. representatives with the presence of the Labor Commissioner and her team.”
