Who is Responsible for Paying Accident Investigator?

Shaun Young

According to Young, he was surprised at the response when he asked the leader of the investigating team why the Department of Civil Aviation was not involved, since they would occasionally assist in these kinds of inquiries.

Shaun Young, Former Employee, Civil Aviation Dept.

“During that time, I ended up asking them well, why is it that the Civil Aviation was not assisting you guys?  And their answer to me was [that] when they checked with Civil Aviation they told them [that] they had to find the rest of the plane.  Now, to me, that was ridiculous because if the whole plane is missing then you’d have a problem.  If you have any part of the plane that’s found, that is where you start your investigation, that’s your start and then you go ahead and make sure that you try to find the other pieces.  On this day when I went out, I saw the wings, I saw the stuff that was there and I told the people, if you want to know how the accident really happened, we could bring up the pieces and then we look pon di damage and everything.  Insofar as technical advice, it was clear that the persons that I was working with had no knowledge of aircrafts because the simple fact that I told them, “Look, the reason why we find di wings dehn da because it’s a built-in safety feature eena any plane that once yoh aircraft di hit something hard, the wings are made to break off.”  So their idea was that the wings broke off because it was such a powerful crash.  I told them no, it could have been a slow crash but it’s designed to break off.  In my opinion, I gave them the synopsis of what I think happened to the plane and that provided them a lot of information.  On the third day, I returned back to work because they said they would call me when they needed, if they found the rest of the plane.  And so far as that, I have been calling and checking back for payment on that and I have received none.  I’ve received just the turnaround telling me that it was at the ministry, it was there.  And soh right now I eena wahn position weh I haftu state my case because the same persons that let me go are the same persons that I had to come back and work for now and they are not providing payment for me and I’m not making any money the way I used to when I worked for them, so that work was not free.”
