M.O.H.W. Says Vaccine Safe for Pregnant Women

Natalia Largaespada Beer

As it relates to pregnant and breastfeeding women, the Ministry of Health and Wellness will begin to administer vaccine to these women because according to Doctor Beer, the data shows that it is safe to do so.

Dr. Natalia Largaespada Beer, Maternal & Child Health Technical Advisor, M.O.H.W.

“In regards to pregnant women and COVID-19 vaccines, the recommendation from the world health organization is that there is still insufficient data in the use of the COVID-19 vaccine in pregnancy. And when they say insufficient data they say insufficient to say vaccinate all pregnant women without any discrimination. So, at this point, even the small data available is showing the vaccine is safe to use during pregnancy. It doesn’t affect the mother, and it doesn’t affect the child. So, women need to understand this before accepting to receive the vaccine. So, for those who are at greater risk, for example a nurse or a doctor that is pregnant, they may request to be vaccinated because of the higher risk of exposure to COVID-19. So in those cases we just need to explain this to them, insufficient data but the data available is showing the vaccine is safe to be used during pregnancy and they will need to accept. And, for women that are breast feeding, the same recommendation was made for the ending of last year and at the begging of this year, and so the world health organization recommends that we can go ahead and vaccinate women who are breast feeding. So, at the beginning of the campaign we were not vaccinating women who were breast feeding, but as of this week we can start blanket vaccinate women who are breastfeeding.”
