Cubans Protest Food Shortages and COVID-19 Response

In regional news, thousands of Cubans are protesting food shortages and power outages amid the coronavirus crisis, in one of the biggest anti-government demonstrations in decades.  The Associated Press reported a high percentage of those who turned out in Havana on Sunday were young people.  The A.P. is reporting that while many tried to record the mass gathering and broadcast the protest live, Cuban authorities shut down internet service throughout the afternoon.  Counter protesters also appeared with about three hundred people close to the government, showing up with a large Cuban flag and shouting slogans in favor of the late President Fidel Castro and the Cuban revolution.  In the small town of San Antonio de los Baños, people protesting against power outages were visited by President Miguel Díaz-Canel.  He blamed social media and the “Cuban-American mafia,” and the influencers and YouTubers who he says engineered the whole campaign. Belize recently sided with Cuba in the United Nations vote, calling for an end to the economic sanctions imposed on Cuba by the United States.
