Mexico Interested in Belizean Products

Milagro Matus

Also present for the meeting was Mexican Ambassador to Belize, Martha Zamarripa Rivas.  Policy Analyst with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise, Milagro Matus told the Press Office that this is the first time Belize’s Minister of Agriculture is leading a delegation in Mexico, and that it speaks to a greater interest by the Mexican Government to increase its investment in Belizean goods and services.  Mexico is also interested in accessing Caribbean markets.

“The issue with cattle is basically the fact that it is the process that is really taking long. We know there is a demand from Mexico for the product. And now, more than ever Mexico has demand for many other commodities, for example the soy beans, the sour-sop. And, they have been for the past helping in the nontraditional areas, honey, we are talking about coconuts. So in this discussion that we had today, we have more to benefit from the discussion than Mexico from us. The investments and the tapping into CARICOM is an area that they have advantage in. They are interested in coming into Belize, investing and being able to leapfrog into CARICOM. So, I think this time is a little bit different, in the sense that they have put these things on the table as their priority. This is one of the first times where the Ministry of Agriculture as apart from the Ministry of Trade leading, the Ministry of Agriculture is meeting with the Agriculture Minister. His technical delegations are here to drive this home. So, as we can see, there is a lot of interest, more so that before.”
