Flag to fly at half mast following death of Haitian President Moise
The Prime Minister of Belize has ordered that flags in Belize be flown at half mast for three days in tribute to the late President of Haiti Jovenel Moise. The Government of Belize and the Caribbean Community has joined the people of Haiti in mourning the death of President Moise, following his assassination inside his home on July seventh, 2021. The latest reports out of the Republic are that on Wednesday evening authorities intercepted persons believed to have been involved in the assassination. It is being reported that a gun battle ensued between police officers and the suspects. Four of the suspects were reportedly killed by police in that exchange. Prior to President Moise’s assassination, protestors had taken to the streets demanding his removal. The legitimacy of his presidency by decree was under question, and many were of the opinion that his term had expired. The Government of Belize has called for peace in Haiti, and transparency in the Republic’s congressional and presidential elections scheduled for later this year.
