G.O.B. Condemns Assassination of Haitian President

This morning, the Government of Belize condemned in the strongest terms the assassination of the President of Haiti Jovenel Moïse.  A release from G.O.B. says “such a heinous act of political violence has no place in democratic societies or in the Caribbean Community, which is firmly committed to the rule of law and democratic principles.  The Belize government extends its deepest condolences to the people of Haiti and expresses the hope that with regional and international solidarity and support, the Haitian people will emerge from this latest crisis to find a path to peace and stability.” According to Reuters News Agency, the president’s wife Martine was also shot in the attack at around one a.m. local time at their home in the hills above Port-au-Prince and has been flown to Miami for treatment.  A state of emergency has been declared in Haiti and the Dominican Republic closed the border it shares with Haiti on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola, except to returning citizens.  Here is a brief report from Reuters News Agency on the assassination and the social unrest in Haiti.
