H.R.C.B. Assisting Victims of Human Rights Violations
The Communications Director of the Belize Police Department has spoken out against actions of the officers, saying that the Professional Standards Branch of the department is looking into the incident. But the H.R.C.B. says that these violations have become all too common. The Commission says it provides support to the victims of human rights violations in all its forms.
Oscar Quiroz, Coordinator, Human Rights Commission of Belize
“There needs to be more from the community and human rights N.G.O.s to try and hold these individuals responsible for these actions. We need to start holding them more accountable for these actions. These incidents happen, you hear the investigation goes to the [Professional] Standards Branch and from there what becomes of it and we don’t know. And we would want to know what becomes of these police officers who act in this manner and the public is growing tired of this kind of behaviour and we would want to see more serious action taken against the individuals responsible for these behaviour.”
