Shaun Gill Dreams of Olympic Games; Heads to Tokyo this Month

The 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games are only a few days away and Belizean athlete Shaun Gill will be representing Belize in the one-hundred-meter dash. Today, News Five spoke to Gill, who recently came home after intense training in the U.S.  We learnt about his readiness for the competition as he prepares to fly to Tokyo.

Shaun Gill, Belizean Olympic Athlete

“It is heart-warming, because it is a dream.  As athletes this is what we dream about. The Olympics is the biggest stage when it comes to all the sports, all the disciplines in the world. You know, swimming, track, canoeing, any sport you can think about right. And, this is really the highest stage you can be. And, as a kid growing up this was always the dream. Sometimes it felt like it never would have happened, but I just sticked to the sport. I’ve been in the sports ten fifteen years now and I guess the hard work the pay off now.”

“In terms of young Belizean athletes looking at this right now, who also have that dream of one day making it to the Olympics, what do you say to them?”

Shaun Gill

“It might sound cliché, but you must stick to it. Whatever your sport is, even if it is not a sport. You can be an artist, musician, you must stick with it. You can’t be afraid to knock down barriers, push open doors. You will hear no’s, you will get negative feedback, but you have to stay at it. Eventually with time the dedication, the hard work, will show. It must show.  So, you just have to stay with it.”

Paul Lopez

“Shaun, all the best.”

Shaun Gill

“Thank you.”
